As many of you are aware, we have a spectacular kitchen in the Learning Hub & I'm thrilled to report that it has been getting quite a bit of use lately!
Baking is a great way to teach children how to;
The junior & middle block have been whipping up numerous delicious treats this term which include, chocolate chip biscuits, lolly cake (for the fair), cupcakes with pink icing & several gluten free goodies. I am really looking forward to baking up a feast with Deans class next week for their upcoming parent visit to the classroom - exciting!
I've been well and truly immersed in all things Dinosaur this term with the fabulous children from the Te whanau o nga Rimu syndicate. We have been busy making our very own fossils, which I understand have already made it home in some instances, and we had a ball at the Tyrannosaurs exhibition at TePapa - it was INCREDIBLE! The exhibition showcases a large collection of dinosaurs, bones, activities for the children, and loads of interactive experiences. We all learnt a lot, and I picked up a fabulous book full of dinosaur activities providing Penny & I with a few ideas for the end of term - I'll keep you posted : )
I really enjoyed the Island Bay School's Got Talent Show this year & as always was blown away at how talented our children are (& not to forget the teachers either!). The time and effort that went into each performance was clear to see, and I'd just like to send out a big thank you to the Student Council who put in a lot of time organising and presenting the event too, well done! Congratulations to Ashwin & Kian who won first place! It was fabulous to see the Avie & the teachers supporting the event with their own band, the children loved it : )
I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to help the senior school with their passion projects this term. Following on from watching the 2nd colossal squid examination live from TePapa in the Learning Hub last month, Bede identified Marine Biology as a strong area of interest so this week we took a trip out to NIWA to meet Marine Biologist Dr. Kareen Schnabel and took a close up look at the incredible Invertebrates collection housed at NIWA in Evans Bay (which Kareen manages). It was amazing to see so many preserved specimens showcasing what lives hundreds and thousands meters below in the deep sea. I can see where a lot of Science Fiction inspiration comes from that's for sure! After our trip to NIWA we followed up with an inspection of a squid & some baby octopus in the Learning Hub - it was really interesting! A huge thank you to Dr. Kareen Schnabel from NIWA for her time, expertise & resources, and to Deborah Fenton for coming with us, and for the transport - greatly appreciated!
I am working with a delightful group of girls from the Team Pohutukawa syndicate who have a passion for photography. We are working our way through my Digital Photography 101 course, and are taking half an hour out at the end of each session to go out with our cameras and practice what we have learnt. The results so far are AMAZING! Chole's flower photography takes my breath away & I can't wait to see what they come up with as the weeks progress.
A large group of children identified Architecture as their passion project topic this term, so we were delighted to welcome Alex Hills of Greenweaver Architecture into the Learning Hub to talk to the children about the architectural design process, different types of architecture, what topics you need to study at school if you'd like to become an architect, and the process towards becoming qualified. It was a fascinating presentation and was followed up with a trip down to the Island Bay Community Play Center to take a look at the amazing outside play space that Alex designed and contributed a lot of time towards building herself - the children were very inspired and learnt a lot! I was thrilled to see some children experimenting with an design program called Sketch Up when up I popped into visit them yesterday, I really look forward to seeing their designs.
There is still a lot to pack into the last weeks of school with exciting things such as a visit from Diana Potter to help our WOW hat makers next week, a visit from the Phoenix Football Club, costume making, baking & much much more. Watch this space for updates!

- Learn how to follow instructions
- Learn about quantities and measurement
- Learning about food science (how our ingredients become cooked products / changes of state)
- Having fun in an interactive way whilst learning at the same time
- Learning how about food hygiene & safety in the kitchen
