1. We heated some milk in an electric frying pan & placed the lid on top
2. We very quickly noticed significant condensation forming on the lid of of the frying pan
3. On closer inspection of the condensation we realised that it was in fact water!
4. By continuing to heat the milk we extracted all of the water & were finally left with milk solids
5. We let the milk solids dry & then ground it into a fine powder using a mortar & pestle
6. WOW, we had made our very own milk powder!
7. We then added water to our milk powder & produced a glass of milk again - full circle
We talked in-depth about our expectations (can we take water out of milk?) before we started our experiment, and then adjusted our thinking towards the end of the process. We discovered several changes of state & matter by taking the water out of our milk, making milk solids, producing milk powder, adding water & turning it back into milk again. M10 will proudly display their milk powder at their upcoming inquiry sharing day, so you will get a chance to take a look for yourself!
